  • What is an indefinite Pronoun?

The Indefinite Pronouns

It is a pronoun that you use when you want to indicate to things or people

without determining who or what they are.

in other words, they are used to refer to non specified people or things.
  • There are singular indefinite pronouns, plural indefinite pronouns and variable indefinite pronouns:

Singular, Plural, variable, Pronouns
Different types of Indefinite pronouns

  • First: the singular ones.


For people:

Everybody - everyone
Somebody   - some one
nobody    - no one
anybody   - anyone.


Examples:


a). Someone asked me to lend him money.
b). Everyone wants you to be class president
c). nobody hates you
d). anyone can guess what happened
e). Eventually somebody in the audience spoke.
f). Everybody has their own ideas to build up the company.
g). I haven't told anybody about that.

For things:

Something  -  nothing
Everything -  anything
Neither   -  either
each. 


Examples:

a). Everything is O.K with you?
b). Something incredible happened.
c). anything you say about mr is alie.
d). Nothing I could do would make you happy.
e). I've got two cellphones, but neither work properly.
f). They bought three new cars, each costs around 100

,000$.



  • Usage note:

1.   the Singular pronouns take singular verbs like in the examples above.

2.   We can add -'s to an indefinite pronoun to make a possessive.
I've been driving someone's car.

3.   When we use a (no-) pronoun like nobody or no one, the sentence is supposed to be in the negative form.

For Example:

Everybody didn't attend the meeting. (Wrong).
Nobody attend the meeting. ( Correct).

Usage of Indefinite pronoun

  • Second: the plural ones.

( Both, Few, Many, Several ).

Examples:
 
a). Do you like the red shirt or the blue one?
Both are very good.

b). How many people are there?
Many are waiting in line for their turn.
but few have VIP tickets.
and several are complaining about the long-time waiting.
  • Third: singular and plural pronouns.

There are some indefinite pronouns that can be either singular or plural based on the context.

( All, Any, Most, Some, None, More )

Examples:

a). She's got four children, all are under the age of five.

b). all is gone forever.

c). Are there some shopping malls around? No, there are not any.

d). "Is there any more soup?" "No, I'm afraid there isn't any left."

e). The bus is packed with people!!
 you won't believe it. more are coming.
f). I still need sugar for the cake.
There is more over there.

g). I have many friends with blue eyes, but none have/has blonde hair.
