  • there are different types of pronouns and they have different usages. one of the most confusing pronouns are the demonstrative pronouns,but after learning them you will find out that they are very easy to use and to be understood

 let's take a look at them

a demonstrative pronoun identifies a thing or things a person or people.
  • there are four of them:
(this - these - that - those)

Demonstrative pronouns
1. (this) refer to a noun that is singular and near the speaker in space or time.
  • Examples:
a). this is your cellphone
b). this is great
c). did you taste this?

  • you also use (this) when you want to introduce someone:
 a). this is my brother Paul and this is my girlfriend Stacy

  • It's also used when you want to identify yourself on the phone
 b). Hello, this is Mona from APK industries.


2. (these) refer to a noun that is plural and near the speaker in space or time.
  •  Examples:
a). These look awful
b). these are more expensive 
c). I prefer these

3. (that) refer to a noun that is singular and far away from the speaker in space or time
  •  Examples:
a). that is weird
b). that's my friend's house
c). I got that
we usually use ( that) to refer to what someone has said or done.

4. (those) refer to a noun that is plural and far away form the speaker in space or time.
  •   Examples:

a). those belong to me.
b). those are very tough
c). I liked those

Usage of Demonstrative Pronouns


  • notice that you can use (this, these, that and those) as demonstrative adjectives.
demonstrative adjectives and demonstrative pronouns are identical, they are just the same and the only difference between them is that demonstrative pronouns stand alone.
  • Example:
a). this player is talented.

in the sentence above (this ) is a demonstrative adjective because it modifies a noun (player).

b). I heard that.

 (that) is a demonstrative pronoun because it stands alone.
