Past Simple Tense (Part 1)

The past simple tense:   الماضي البسيط 

Structure:     التركيب

With all subjects whether it is singular or plural; the past simple is conjugated the same way. 

الفاعل سواء كان مفرد أو جمع, الفعل بيتصرف معه بنفس الطريقه في زمن الماضي البسيط

Regular verbs:     الأفعال غير الشاذه

 How to add (ed) to a verb in past simple tense

With regular verbs you just add (Ed, d or ied).

For example:

Visit                        wash                              fix

Work                       travel                            mix

Turn                       switch                          open.

1. With verbs like these, to turn them into past simple form all you have to do is just add (Ed) to the end of the verbs.

Examples:

1.I visited my uncle last week

2.She worked all day long yesterday.

3.We turned off the T.V before sleeping

4.I washed my hands before dinner

5.They traveled to Brazil last year

6.You opened the window before leaving.

2.These verbs already end with the letter E so; you just need to add D to the end of the verb to turn into past simple form.

Examples:

1.I liked our trip very much

2.She lived in England for three years

3.The kids completed their home work

4.We closed the window last night

أما الفعال التانيه اللي بتتنتهي بحرف E بننضيفلها D  بس. أنظر للأمثله.

  3.There are also those verbs which end with the letter Y, if there is a consonant before Y like in the verbs above; you change the letter Y into ied.

 

But if the verb has a vowel before the last letter Y like in the verb (play); you don't change it, you just add the ED ending.

Examples:

1.I tried to help you with your work.

2.The baby cried a lot last night.

3.The criminal denied his crime.

 أما الأفعال اللي بتنتهي بحرف Y وقبله حرف ساكن فبنغير y الي ied. أنظر الأمثله فوق

4. if the verb ends with the a vowel + consonant like in these verbs above; you have to double the last letter before adding the ED ending.

Examples:

1.She logged into my computer.

2.I committed myself to teaching English.

3.We admitted making a mistake

لو الفعل أنتهي بحرف ساكن وقبله حرف متحرك بنتكتب الحرف السكن مرتين زي الأمثله اللي فوق.

 Irregular verb: الأفعال الشاذه

Irregular verbs in the past simple tense

• ·        There are the irregular verbs which have special past forms.

 هناك بعض الأفعال الشاذه اللي لها تصريف مختلف في الماضي وأشهر الأفعال دي هي be and have

وتصريف هذه الأفعال يتم كما يلي:

The two most important irregular verbs are (be and have)

First, let's conjugate the verb (Be) in the past simple

I              was                            we           were

He           was                           they         were

She         was                           you          were

It             was                           you          were

Examples:

1.I was happy to see my uncle

2.He was at his office

3.They were at home when the fire alarm went off

4.You were good at math.

Second, verb to have in the past form conjugates the same way with all the subjects.

Let's take a look at it.

I       had                            we       had

He    had                           they     had

She  had                           you      had

It      had                           you      had

Examples:

1.I had a bicycle at 10 years old.

2.We had a nice trip to France last year

3.He had a stomachache yesterday.
